Haor in Bangladesh

Haor bowl-shaped large tectonic depression. It receives surface runoff water by rivers and khals, and consequently, a haor becomes very extensive water body in the monsoon and dries up mostly in the post-monsoon period. In Bangladesh haors are found mainly in greater Sylhet and greater Mymensingh regions. During monsoon a haor is a vast stretch of turbulent water. The word haor is a corrupt form of the Sanskrit word Sagar (sea). In Sylhet and northeast Mymensingh, the people pronounce the Bangla letter ‘m’ (sa) as ‘n’ (ha), and some times ‘M’ (ga) as ‘n’ (ha). Thus sagar is sounded haor.

Tanguar Haor:

Tanguar Haor is best experienced on a boat ride caressing across the still water. Laying down under a starlit sky captivated by the hugeness of the world is an unparalleled experience. Whereas, upon travelling during the day, you can witness the various shades the endless sky takes upon like a chameleon. 

Satia Beel:

Satia Beel, the marshland, is like a sea of floating water lilies expanding as far as the eye can reach. This lasts for around five months, from June July to October November, and draws visitors from all over. The 200-acre beel is in Uzirpur Upazila Halta and some 60 kilometers away from Barisal city. These aquatic flowers begin to conjure up a vibrant pink carpet on the lake from the last part of autumn to the mid-late autumn. The scenic beauty of the beel with an expanse of waters, red lilies, and the green patch of trees around the banks is heart-touching. A boat ride in the beel will be an unforgettable memory of life. Shuffler is cultivated here throughout the village.

Matian Haor:

Matian Haor is another noteworthy lovely Haor in Sunamganj District. The crystal clear water and lush greenery under the semi blue sky keep you in a canvas. Lens suffocates at a point to image the mesmerizing beauty of Matian Haor. It is a paradise for travel lovers.

Hail Haor:

Hail Haor is located in Moulvibazar District. It is one of Bangladesh’s noteworthy wetlands. This is one of the safest places for numerous wild animals and migrating birds. Hail Haor Wildlife refuge is a large wildlife refuge in Bangladesh. It is one of the most important wetlands in the Sylhet Basin for both migratory and resident ducks. It also serves as a crucial water source for the locals when all other sources go dry during the summer. The sanctuary is in Moulvibazar District, in the northeast of the country.

Nikli Haor:

Nikli Haor is another treasure of Bangladesh, with its alluring natural beauty. The shimmering sea beneath brilliant blue skies dotted with clouds is a sight to see. Because of their size, the communities that surround the port appear to be distant islands. Once you’re deep inside the haor, you’ll forget about anything else and be entirely engulfed in its serenity. Nikli Haor stands out for its floating market. There are numerous of boats carrying various refreshments that you may buy while enjoying your boat journey. Nikli Haor is easily accessible within a day’s travel. The best time to visit is during the monsoon season to fully appreciate its beauty.

Chalan Beel:

Chalan Beel, located in Bangladesh’s central west region, is one of the country’s major beel systems, albeit declining in recent years due to extensive silting. During the monsoon, the beel regains some of its former grandeur. It serves as a vast watershed for several large and minor rivers, and it also includes interesting flora and fauna. Because of its immensity, it is accessible from a variety of locations, many of which are utterly rural and primitive.

Hakaluki Haor:

Hakaluki, Bangladesh’s largest haor, is located in Sylhet, close the Assam-Bangladesh border. The haor covers parts of Baralekha, Kulaura, Gopalganj, Fenchuganj, and Moulavibazar upazilas. According to official resources, Hakaluki is home to around 550 types of wildlife, including several rare and endangered species, which is why the area is protected. It is an excellent choice for environmentally responsible vacations as well as natural exploration.

Baikka Beel:

Baikka Beel, a bird and fish sanctuary, is located in Sreemangal and Moulvibazar. It’s part of Hail Haor. The beel covers 1000 hectares and includes open water with emergent plants and a perimeter of natural swamp woodland. Thousands of birds dwell here, and many more migrate. You can watch birds all year. When you reach the wetland region, you will be captivated by the chirping of birds. A watchtower stands in the center of the beel. The beel provides a lovely view of birds, lilies, lotuses, and other aquatic plants and flowers. There are 98 fish species, the majority of which are native, as well as 160 bird species, including migratory ones.Experts think Baikka Beel is the best spot in the country for bird watching.

Arial Beel:

Arial Beel is Bangladesh’s third largest wetland, with an area of 136 square kilometers. It is located in Srinagar Upazila, Munshiganj District. The beel comprises of numerous small ponds and canals. During the rainy season, the flora become more vibrant, and the broad land borders appear strange. Though the beel shrinks in winter, it is still navigable. The beel is rich in fish, and during the dry season, farmers grow corn and vegetables in the dry area. The pumpkin in this beel is famous.
